HAVANA (PL) — Implementing a strategy including a creative, increasingly environmental-friendly industry that favors energy sustainability, the Cuban authorities are marking World Tourism Day today.
A communiqué by the Tourism Ministry (MINTUR) said the slogan for the occasion is Tourism and Energy Sustainability: Driving Forces behind Sustainable Development, aimed at highlighting on of the most relevant economic sectors in the planet because of its requirements, its crises and its environmental impact.
These celebrations point to a more promising energy future, amid a world context marked by high environmental pollution and limited reserves of natural resources like water and oil, added the note.
Linking tourist activity to energy sustainability offers the opportunity to raising public awareness about the importance of saving, the need to find new formulas and the responsibility of this sector, MINTUR stressed.
In this regard, the Cuban nation develops a future-oriented responsible, non-polluting, sustainable tourism, with a guarantee of peace, health and security, according to the note.
Sep. 27 was chosen as World Tourism Day because on that date in 1970, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization were adopted.
The adoption of these Statutes is considered a milestone in global tourism.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness on the role of tourism within the international community and to demonstrate how it affects social, cultural, political and economic values worldwide.
