Grenada’s Address to the first session of the Assembly of IRENA

Hon. V. Nazim Burke, Minister responsible for Energy in Grenada, is currently on his way to participate in the Fifth session of the Preparatory Commission for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), on April 3rd and the First session of the Assembly of IRENA, on April 4th and 5th, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). He is accompanied by Hon. Karl Hood, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Environment, Foreign Trade and Export Development; Dr. Hugh Sealy, Energy Advisor in the Ministry of Finance; and Mr. Alva Browne Foreign Service Officer of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

IRENA was officially established in Bonn on 26 January 2009 to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy. Acting as the global voice for renewable energies, IRENA facilitates access to all relevant renewable energy information, including technical data, economic data and renewable resource potential data. IRENA shares experiences on best practices and lessons learned regarding policy frameworks, capacity-building, finance mechanisms and renewable energy initiatives.

Grenada signed on to IRENA in June 2009 being the 88th country to do so worldwide, and the 1st country in the OECS and CARICOM. Grenada will soon ratify the IRENA statute.

Minister Burke’s participation in the current assembly presents a very useful opportunity for the Government of Grenada to mobilize support for its renewable energy programme, consistent with the recently approved Energy Policy.

While in the UAE, Minister Burke will engage in several bilateral meetings, seeking support for investment in the five lead sectors which were announced in the 2011 Budget Speech, especially in energy development. Minister Burke will also explore scholarship opportunities for Grenadians.
